Colorado Gardening Challenges

Colorado, we love you for so many reasons, but you do make gardening and landscaping a challenge! (A challenge we’re willing to take on.) Understanding these challenges will help you *immensely*.

It’s the first day of Summer, so let’s get a head start on tackling these hurdles so you can have a Summer full of lovin’, not a Summer full of strugglin’!

Challenge 1:
INTENSE SUNLIGHT ☀️
As you know, we have 300+ days of sunshine annually, which can cause sunburn, heat stress, and / or water loss to your plants. To shield your garden from the sun's harsh rays, provide shade during peak sunlight hours using shade cloth, trellises, or strategically placed trees and shrubs.

Challenge 2:
LIMITED RAINFALL ☂️
Denver only receives an average of 9 to 15 inches of usable precipitation per year, which means water conservation is ESSENTIAL. Water plants either early in the morning (between 4-10AM) to enable their roots to absorb moisture most effectively.

Challenge 3:
STRONG WINDS 🌀
Frequent strong winds can desiccate plants, erode the soil, and cause physical damage. Create windbreaks using fences, hedges, or trellises to create a sheltered microclimate for your garden. Staking or supporting tall plants can also help prevent wind damage.

Challenge 4:
TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS🌡
In Denver, we experience huge temperature variations with very hot days often followed by cool nights. Mulch can help regulate soil temperature and moisture levels, providing a more stable environment for plants to thrive.

Challenge 5:
HAILSTORMS ⛈️
Hailstorms are common during Spring and Summer, posing a threat to plants with their potential for rapid damage. Install hail netting or use row covers during hail-prone seasons to protect your garden from harm.

Let us help you understand what you need for your yard and / or garden!
